Do you remember uniforms for gym class? Running shoes black or blue, tube socks either plain white or with stripes at the top, grey, black, or navy shorts, and white t-shirts. This was pretty standard stuff, a uniform the kind of dress code that leaves no room for self expression or individuality. Most folks don’t much care for uniforms because they are just that uniform, the same old same old. We see a great deal of uniformity when it comes to social media. Not that uniformity is bad, but is it really what you are going for? Customization (as noted by Chris Brogan) of a users experience is a big key to getting like minded people under the same roof. Now this is going to sound like a bit of hypocrisy, but do you want to be branded or would you like to do the branding? I remember when I enlisted and we had to go to the Post Exchange to purchase our uniforms for physical training. We were 12th battalion, Bravo Company Military Police recruits. We had yellow sweat pants and hoodies with the Bravo Bulldog on the front, white socks, green shorts with yellow lettering and green t-shirts with the same logo as the sweat shirt. The only choice we were allowed to make was what running shoes we wanted. So you are saying, “Gym uniforms?” No these were 12th Battalion Bravo Company Military Police physical training uniforms. Huh? Customization, most people saw sweat suits and sneakers. As part of the tribe I belonged to it was something only I and my fellow recruits were allowed to wear. No 5th Battalion Delta Dragons from the Chemical Warfare school could wear these, only 12th Battalion Bravo Bulldogs. So is your fan page, twitter page, blog, or even website the stock product? Are you settling for high school gym uniforms or are you thinking about maybe something more? Customization of social media to make it your own is a fine way to further your brand and give your community identity and unity. No one wants to wear a uniform, unless they choose to, and why would you want to wear the stock issue when you can get your own with the snazzy graphics and letters down the sleeve? Not sure how to get those tweaks into your online presence or struggling to emerge as a presence and leader online? Technology Workgroup can help you move away from the everyday and into your own genuine article.
