No, it isn’t a typo. I really meant “sheepwalker”. One who follows the status quo …because that’s what we do (as defined by Seth Godin). Social Media is beginning to produce “sheepwalkers”. All of my competitors are on Facebook, all of the other businesses have a Twitter account, so my business must follow all the others. Do I know what I expect to gain using Social Media? Who do I want to attract? What are my goals? Or have I jumped in because I’m “sheepwalking”?

These are such important questions. I just spoke to a group last week about Social Media Marketing and I gave them a great list of questions to ask before jumping into Social Media for their business. Such as - What’s your point? What’s your one thing? How will you measure success?

Apple is successful because they have a following. Zappos is successful because they connected a group of people who share a single passion. Tom’s Shoes is successful because giving one for one is important to Blake.

So, for you the most important question to ask and then act upon is: How will you create a community around your business, product, or service?

In the following weeks I will continue to explore “sheepwalking” or “tribe building”; your business model for the Social future.
